Here is a question that we are often asked, “Are there any limitations or sports that my child can’t participate in?”  During orthodontic treatment with braces, you can play any sport. However, we have to be careful to protect our lips and teeth from injury.

The best way to protect our teeth is with an orthodontic mouth guard. Mouth guards can protect your cheeks and lips from serious cuts and can prevent damage to your braces or orthodontic appliance if you fall over or are hit in the face. Orthodontic mouth guards are different from a regular mouth guard, as it has specially designed flanges that go up under the lips to keep the lips from being pushed into the brackets. The orthodontic mouth guard should be used for all contact sports.

As long as you protect teeth and braces from injury using an orthodontic mouth guard it won’t stop you from joining in on your sports, So keep up the fitness kids!

Currently we recommend the Opro shield Ortho Gold mouth guard which we sell at both our practices – Hope this helps! 🙂
